A Dental Assisting Training Vocational School is Discussing the Three Types of Tooth Stains and How to Remove Them
Today, many people want to achieve the perfect smile. In order to do this, people need to remove stains from their teeth using a teeth whitener. Dental Assisting Institute, a provider of dental assisting classes in Pinellas Park, FL, is discussing types of teeth stains and how to whiten your teeth.
Types of tooth stains
First, you should know a little bit about the three types of tooth stains. Extrinsic stains are the stains that discolor your enamel, which is the outer layer of a tooth. The enamel helps protect the inner part of the tooth. Extrinsic stains are caused by anything that comes into contact with your mouth – including berries, any type of colored food, and red wine. This contact leads to the tooth’s enamel absorbing some of the colors from the food, which creates a stain.
Next, we will be discussing intrinsic stains. Intrinsic stains are when the inner part of the tooth, called dentin, gets stained. Dentin is naturally darker than enamel is, so that it will be more of a yellow color. It also is only exposed when the enamel is too thin or gets scraped off. These stains are mainly caused by overexposure to fluoride or specific side effects from antibiotics.
The third and final type of tooth stain is a stain related to age. As people age, their teeth change. Usually, this means that dentin gets darker or more yellow, and enamel can wear off. This means that your teeth may be discolored due to these changes.
How to remove tooth stains
Each type of tooth stain requires a different method of removal. For extrinsic tooth stains, you would want to start with an at-home whitening process. This would include whitening toothpaste, mouthwash, strips, or any other whitening products. You should always ask a dental professional what products are safe to use.
For intrinsic and age-related stains, you would want to get a professional whitening treatment done. Since these stains are deeper than surface stains, you should consider going to a dental office to get your teeth whitened. In a dental office, stronger products are used, which causes the stains to disappear faster. You may need anywhere from one to three visits done to get your teeth the whitest.
